Hollis Towns announced his resignation as vice president of content and editor-in-chief of Alabama Media Group’s al(dot)com on Tuesday, effective March 28.

According to The Birmingham Times, Towns told staff, “I’m leaving as editor and will be pursuing other opportunities. I will take time off but will be around through the end of the month.”

Towns took over as editor-in-chief at al(dot)com on March 25, 2024.

“It wasn’t the right fit. I had a fantastic team that does exceptional journalism, but … it was time to pursue other opportunities," he told The Times on Tuesday.

Towns came to al(dot)com from Gannett, where he served as vice president for local news and regional editor. According to an April 2023 report from the Rochester Business Journal, Towns was named in a discrimination lawsuit against Gannett and the Gannett-owned newspaper, the Utica (N.Y.) Observer-Dispatch.

Steven Bradley, the former sports editor for the Rochester, N.Y. Democrat and Chronicle, alleged Towns had banned hiring "straight white males." (UPDATE: The lawsuit was dismissed in August.)
