On Sunday night, Homewood Police responded to the fifth floor of Brookwood Hospital for a possible shots-fired call and found a male and an adult female dead from gunshot wounds. The floor is usually reserved for mothers who have just given birth.
According to a press release from the department, the call for assistance came in at approximately 9:25 p.m. Images online showed a large police presence, and reports on social media indicate that the hospital was on lockdown.
"Preliminary investigation by Homewood Police detectives shows that the incident is an apparent murder-suicide. The area is still active as detectives and crime scene investigators continue to process the scene," according to HPD public information officer Staff Sergeant Allan Trippe.
A second statement from HPD said that nobody else in the hospital was injured.
“An incident occurred at Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital Sunday evening. Homewood police immediately responded and secured the scene. Out of an abundance of caution, the hospital remains in lockdown but there is no active threat to patients, team members or the public. Baptist Health is cooperating fully with authorities investigating the incident,” hospital spokesman David McKinney said in a release.
