Derrick Murphy announced in late January that he was seeking reelection to Hoover City Council Place 5. This week, Steve Lawrence announced that he will challenge Murphy.
Murphy was elected to the council in 2016 and ran unopposed in the 2020 election.
In a statement released by his campaign, Lawrence said, "I'm not running for City Council because I'm a politician, I'm running because I care."
"I've watched too many decisions get made in haste, without full transparency, and with little regard for their long-term impact on our families and future. It's time for change," Lawrence continued.
In a statement announcing his reelection campaign in January, Murphy said, "Hoover's growing population and business expansion are indicators of a healthy, thriving city. With that growth, Hoover has grown to be the 6th largest city in the State of Alabama with the largest High School in the State of Alabama. I will continue to keep my commitment to understand the needs of our school district, our planning and zoning board, and our residents to develop strategies that meet the needs of today without compromising the quality of life for future generations."
Murphy said, "Ensuring excellent schools, maintaining our standard of excellence with regard to public safety, and keeping Hoover's momentum with smart, sustainable growth will be my priorities as Hoover City Councilman."
He listed maintaining and funding excellent schools, strengthening funding for public safety, focusing on stormwater and infrastructure planning and sustainability, promoting park and recreational opportunities, as well as performing arts opportunities, and supporting business owners.
Lawrence's campaign slogan is, "Protecting What Works. Improving What Matters," which reflects both his respect for the city's legacy and his dedication to improving what's next for Hoover."
"I'm proud of where Hoover has been, but I'm even more hopeful for where we can go," Lawrence said. "That's why I'm running, to serve with purpose, to ask the right questions, and to fight for the kind of leadership our city deserves."
The election will be held on August 26. A run-off election, if necessary, will occur on September 23. Information about the election calendar and polling places from the City of Hoover Elections website.
