Just over a week from the August 26 election, Hoover Mayor-elect Nick Derzis announced his transition team. The team will be led by chairman Michael J. Davis, with B.J. Ellis serving as vice chairman. Included among familiar names to people of the City of Hoover are former Hoover city attorney Charlie Waldrep, who will serve as legal counsel. Former CFO Melinda Lopez is also serving on the committee.
The team, which includes eight committees, will focus on key areas, "including education and workforce development, public safety, economic growth, infrastructure, fiscal accountability, parks and recreation, and quality of life," according to a press release.
"I am excited to introduce this outstanding group of individuals who will help guide Hoover during this important transition," Derzis said in a written statement. "Each member brings expertise, vision, and a genuine dedication to our community. Together, they reflect the strengths of Hoover—from our schools and neighborhoods to our businesses and civic institutions—and I am confident in their ability to help us prepare for the opportunities ahead."
The group held its first meeting on Wednesday.
- Kermit Kendrick will head the education and workforce development committee, joined by Dr. Jennifer Hogan, Craig Kelley, Dr. Tyler Burgess, and Elizabeth Tanner.
- Frank Barfield will lead the public safety and city services committee with the support of Craig Caldwell and Allen Pate.
- Don Erwin will chair the economic development committee, working alongside Greg Barker, Commissioner Mike Bolin, and Alan Paquette.
- Scott Promer, PE, MBA, will oversee the water and transportation infrastructure committee, joined by Lanier Brown, Esq., and Dewayne Smith.
- Melinda Lopez will lead the transparency, risk, and fiscal accountability committee, supported by Steve Lawrence and Frank Long.
- Pete Derzis and Craig Moss will serve as co-chairs for sports, tourism, parks, and recreation committee, working with Tynette Lynch and Greg Blackman.
- David Bannister will direct the quality of life, beautification, and civic engagement committee, supported by David Cohen, Glen Durough, Sanjay Patel, Kim Starling, Scott Underwood, and Ralph Williams.
- Charlie Waldrep and Jim White are serving on a legal review committee.
Derzis will be officially sworn into office on Monday, November 3. The final election results show that Derzis defeated Brocato with 9,676 votes (56% of the total 17,425 votes cast in the mayoral race) to Brocato's 7,749 votes (or 44% of the total votes cast).
