In a Monday appearance on Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5's "The Jeff Poor Show," House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels (D-Huntsville) called out his colleagues in the Alabama Legislature for not extending the state's overtime tax exemption, which is due to expire this year.
Daniels said it was "ridiculous" that state lawmakers were sitting on their hands rather than pushing to eliminate the overtime taxes. He urged his colleagues to have the "courage" to speak up and prioritize the tax cut.
“So for me, for us to be against extending the tax that we were so proud to pass approximately two years ago, it's ridiculous for us to just sit on our hands and not ... eliminate the tax on overtime for hard-working Alabamians," he declared.
“There are a number of Republicans that are in support of extending the overtime bill," Daniels added. "They, of course, they're not necessarily having a larger conversation about it. I do think they're having an internal conversation with their other colleagues. And so, there are very few that's really against extending it. But for the most part, the majority of them are in support of it. I just hope that at some point, they will find the courage to speak up and prioritize which tax cuts make the most difference and which do not.
"And so, I hope that they will, once this bill is introduced on March 18 that they will start speaking up about it. Because you have folks down in South Alabama, Senator [Chris] Elliott, you've heard him, he's been on the record of supporting it. Lieutenant Governor Ainsworth has been on the record of supporting extending it as well. And so, you have a number of your colleagues down in South Alabama and throughout the state, they're actually in support of it. And so, I just hope that they will speak louder about this," he concluded. "... [I]t just works for everyone."
