The Foley City Council will consider a resolution authorizing the City to go to bid on a $6 million hurricane shelter for first responders.

Designs and plans for the brick building are complete.

A Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant will cover approximately $5 million of the project's costs.

Foley Mayor Ralph Hellmich said the building design will match the appearance of other city structures and will be low-maintenance.

Plans for the shelter have been developed over the past five years. The facility will provide shelter for firefighters, police and other emergency responders during hurricanes or other emergencies where a shelter is needed. The building will also be available for training.

The council will consider the resolution during its regular meeting on Monday, beginning at 4 p.m. in the council chambers of City Hall.
