The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) provided an update on a project to widen Interstate 65 from Alabaster to Calera.

The two-phase, $143 million project “should be open by Spring 2028,” ALDOT stated.

Phase one began in February and June. Phase two began in October.

The project includes the replacement of eight bridges, new retaining walls under existing bridges and additional lanes.

Governor Kay Ivey has made the project a priority through the Rebuild Alabama Act benefit. The purpose is to ease I-65 congestion and improve emergency response times by widening bridges.

In an update, ALDOT said an additional lane is being added near exit 231 in Calera. Dunn Construction is working on the southernmost section of the project, building out an additional lane inside the median. The company is also constructing a bridge over the railroad tracks near the exit.

McInnis Construction is working on the northern sections, currently grading for a third lane from Buck Creek to Old U.S. 31.

Chilton Contractors has shifted lanes between exit 234 and Buck Creek.

“Rebuild Alabama continues to show results, and the work on I-65 is a clear example of that momentum,” Ivey said. “These upgrades will ease traffic, improve safety and strengthen one of our state’s most vital corridors. I’m proud of the progress our contractors and ALDOT are making, and I know the people of Alabama will feel the difference once this widening is complete.”
