Saturday, following the Alabama Crimson Tide's 24-21 win over the Georgia Bulldogs in Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga., Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson offered a selfless assessment of his team's success for ABC viewers, recognizing his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the very beginning.
ESPN sideline reporter Holly Rowe asked Simpson how his team was able to pull off the victory, ending Georgia's 33-game home winning streak.
"Man, first off — I just want to thank the Lord. You know, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ," Simpson said. "I wouldn't be here. You know, he gave us the opportunity and blessing to play today. But, you know, a credit to my teammates, man. My teammates stepped up big time. You know, a lot of guys on offense. I couldn't do it without them. I'm just so proud of this team and Alabama in general. I told them before the game it is Alabama against the world. When we walk out of there, we are gladiators. This is the coliseum, and they played like it."
Rowe said, "You're right, this is one of the best atmospheres I have ever seen, and you are poised and composed, and you didn't let it rattle you. How?"
"Like I said — my Lord and Savior," Simpson replied. "But, it goes back to one, my coaches and my teammates. All we were intentional on everything we did, right? And it showed out here tonight. We played complimentary football. You know, we couldn't get it going on offense in the second half. Our defense [did] a hell of a job, and I'm so proud of my teammates, man. They did an awesome job."
