A 14-year-old Sand Mountain boy has died after suffering from complications related to the flu.

On Monday, New Home Baptist Church in Pisgah announced that Noah Smothers, one of its members, passed away at TC Thompson Children’s Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn.

"Noah was an active member of NHBC youth and was such a kind young man! While our hearts are breaking, we can rest assured knowing that Noah is in the arms of Jesus," the church said. "What a blessing to see him baptized not long ago. Because of his decision to accept Jesus as his savior, we can have the peace of knowing that we can see him again!"

Ider High School, where Smothers attended, also released a statement following his death, saying, “Noah ‘Smo’ Smothers was an Ider Hornet through and through, exemplifying strength of character and a bright young mind. He was a friend to many and will be missed dearly by all who knew him at our little school."

"Please keep his family and friends in your prayers as they endure this difficult time," the school added.

Officials with the Alabama Department of Public Health anticipate that the worst of the flu season is likely still weeks away.
