Homeland Security officials in Atlanta said illegal immigrants on a raided construction site in Baldwin County had planned hideout spots to disperse to in case of a raid.
Fox 10 spoke to special agent in charge of HSI in Alabama and Georgia Steven Schrank, who said federal officials received tips that illegal immigrants were working on the new Loxley Elementary School.
The Gulf of America Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) entered the location and arrested nearly a dozen people.
“There were aliens that dispersed to what has been alleged to be predetermined locations,” Schrank told Fox 10. “They hid up in an attic and removed the ladder so that we couldn’t go in and get them.”
The general contractor on the job is Sharpe, Inc. The company has not responded to a media inquiry.
The task force arrested an additional 13 individuals later in the day at an unspecified location between Spanish Fort and Loxley, the FBI Mobile said.
The Gulf of America HSTF is made up of agents from Homeland Security Investigations, the FBI, Border Patrol, the ATF, Enforcement and Removal Operations, the DEA, as well as state and local sheriffs' offices and police departments.
