BIRMINGHAM — U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) cleared his first hurdle in his bid to be the state's next governor on Tuesday, winning the GOP nomination over insurance salesman Ken McFeeters and small business owner Will Santivasci.

After staving off a residency challenge from McFeeters the day before, Alabama's senior U.S. Senator was named the winner of the GOP primary, with 86.3% of the vote, with only 11% of votes reported.

According to Tuberville, Alabama will be the "number one state in the country" under his leadership. The former Auburn football coach also emphasized the importance of keeping Alabamians in the state by bringing in business.

"We have so much opportunity in this state," Tuberville told a crowd of nearly 1,000 at Vulcan Park and Museum, adding that he would form a group of people to gauge how to make Alabama better.

"First of all, I'm going to bring up that we have to put God back in our country. We have to put God back in our families. We have to do the things that are basic. It's like blocking and tackling. You have to do the basic things: build our families back, build a strong military, build a strong law enforcement. that is one thing that makes me mad: how can you believe that you can defund our law enforcement? Well, that's what I'm running against."

"We have got to start teaching our kids knowledge instead of indoctrination. This DEI nonsense, this critical race theory has got to go. And I'm not going to take no for an answer. We're going to have a strong legislative group. After tonight, we'll have a group that will come back and start next January, and we're going to put everything in perspective of making it better. We can do it. People want to move to the South, and they're going to pick. I'm getting back in the SEC."

Tuberville also said he was looking forward to running against the Democrat ideology, which he said was "so bad."

"I'm running against socialism and communism. I'm running against people who believe in killing the unborn. I'm running against, my God, folks, I'm running against people that I don't know if they believe in God anymore. I'm running against people that want to tear down our military. I'm running against people that absolutely want to change this country and write everybody a check and say, 'everything is going to be great,' but who is going to work, and who is going to make the money? That's who they are now. I'm running against people that believe that men can play in women's sports. I just can't fathom that," he outlined.

"I'm running against an ideology that is so bad that is so far left that has nothing to do with the last 250 years that this country has been great, that it's going to be fun to run against because they have nothing positive to say," Tuberville continued. "We're going to talk about how great this country is and how much greater we can make it [and] how much greater we can make Alabama."

Tuberville will square off with former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones, who secured the Democrat nomination on Tuesday.
