A Democrat candidate for Alabama's fifth congressional district identified himself as a proud member of Antifa in a social media post asking other "anti-fascists" to make campaign donations.

Jeremy Devito of Athens, a self-proclaimed progressive, has set up a link on the popular liberal fundraising site, ActBlue, where contributions can be made.

Devito aims to attract at least 2,000 individuals to contribute $25 each, thereby achieving the desired goal of an additional $50,000 in campaign funds.

In a recently released campaign video, the liberal was highly critical of the Trump administration.

"Right now, we're facing an authoritarian takeover and the complete erosion of our democratic systems," Devito said. "Our president is literally threatening to invade American cities, and then memes about it like it's a joke. Let me be clear. It's not a joke. It's unconstitutional, it's dangerous, and it's deeply harmful to our country.

"All the things we've been fighting for in demanding reproductive freedom, access to health care and quality education for our kids. All of it is at risk if we don't defend our democracy."

Should Devito win the Democratic primary, he will be facing off against incumbent U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Monrovia).

The general election for the fifth congressional district will be held on November 3, 2026.
