U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) is working to protect children from gender transition surgeries with a newly introduced piece of legislation.

On Monday, the lawmaker announced the Chloe Cole Act, which would codify President Donald Trump's recent executive order ending the United States' support of "transitioning" children. Tuberville's bill specifically bans the chemical and surgical mutilation of children and provides "detransitioners" whose bodies have been damaged by sex change procedures with legal recourse.

"Thousands of America's children have fallen prey to the radical left's woke gender ideology," Tuberville said. "Allowing our young children whose brains aren't even fully developed to make life-altering decisions isn't only dangerous, but it's pure insanity."

"American families have been lied to for far too long—these surgeries cause irreversible harm. This sick attack on our children ends now with President Trump and his team," he added.

Tuberville teamed up with U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) to bring the bill forward.

"I'm proud to join Sen. Blackburn in cosponsoring this legislation to stop the abuse of America's children and enforce the President's pro-family agenda," he added.

Blackburn called gender transition surgeries on minors "barbaric abuse."

"No child should be pushed into irreversible chemical and surgical mutilation under the guise of so-called 'gender-affirming care,'" said Blackburn. "The Chloe Cole Act would put a stop to this barbaric abuse of children and give those who have suffered the consequences of these harmful procedures the chance to fight back."

The Chloe Cole Act is named after a young woman who underwent a double mastectomy at 15 years old. Cole has since detransitioned and committed herself to ensuring that gender transition surgeries are not permitted on minors.

Tuberville and Blackburn are joined by U.S. Sens. Ted Budd (R-N.C.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Ashley Moody (R-Fla.), Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.) and Rick Scott (R-Fla.) in co-sponsoring the legislation.

U.S. Rep. Bob Onder (R-Mo.) led the effort in the U.S. House of Representatives.
