U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) is calling out President Joe Biden for his recent lame-duck decision to allow Ukraine to use U.S.-made long-range missiles inside Russian borders. Tuberville said this move will likely escalate tensions and could hinder President-elect Donald Trump from brokering a peace deal when he takes office.
After receiving approval from the Biden administration days before, Ukraine fired American-made ATACMS missiles into Russia on Tuesday, hitting a weapons arsenal. The Biden administration announced Wednesday that it would also give Ukraine anti-personnel mines to deter further Russian advances and cancel half of Ukraine's debt to the U.S., totaling nearly $4.6 billion.
In response, the U.S. embassy in Kyiv has halted operations in anticipation of a possible ariel Russian attack on the country's capital in reprisal.
On a Wednesday media call with reporters, Tuberville denounced the Biden administration's attempts to escalate the war, claiming it was an attempt to hinder Trump's plans to deliver on campaign promises to bring a swift end to the conflict.
"It could be devastating," Tuberville said. "I think that President Biden and his administration is trying to make it very, very hard on President Trump when he takes office. They're trying to escalate the war. Giving long-range missiles, at this point during this war while Ukraine is almost in a retreating position, they have no chance to win, to give them the opportunity to shoot long-range missiles into Russia to kill civilians and escalate this war just before President Trump comes into office, to me it's un-American."
Tuberville continued to criticize the Biden administration, suggesting that the sitting president is not ultimately the one making decisions.
"President Biden has been over in the Amazon, down in Rio de Janeiro. I think he's bird-watching, and he made this call while he was there," Tuberville said. "And I don't believe that. I think somebody here in Washington, D.C., made that call. And again, it's making it very, very difficult for President Trump, and it's getting hundreds and hundreds of more people killed."
"President Trump will end this war once he takes office. Hopefully, he can save lives, and we can even save lives before then. God bless the people in Ukraine, and let's get this thing over with."
