On Wednesday, U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) criticized the blowback from Democrats over President Donald Trump's efforts to decrease rampant crime in Washington, D.C.

Earlier this month, Trump activated the National Guard and placed the DC Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control to "reestablish law and order of public safety" in the nation's capital, which has been met with criticism from the left.

Britt told JT Nyeswander on "Alabama's Morning News" that Democrats being opposed to Trump's efforts to shore up the crime problem proved the party lacked common sense and was "embracing crime." She went on to say that safe streets were "imperative" for a better pathway to the American Dream for citizens.

"Well, it's absolutely ridiculous. It shows that, you know, they're there once again, you know, the party of, you know, they seem to be they lack common sense and seem to be somehow embracing crime. I mean, think about that, JT," Britt said of the blowback.

"I mean, you think about the crime rate in DC," she added. "And President Trump has laid it in front of the American people. He has put it in front and said, look at the capital of Colombia, look at the capital of this, this, this. He's gone down one by one and shown how disproportionate the crime is there in Washington, D.C. It's simply unacceptable in the greatest country in the world. We should, people should be able to come, school groups should be able to come, families should be able to come, and listen, young people should be able to come and work for their state, work for their country without fear of having to walk home to their apartment or their hotel at night safely. I, for one, this is personal, you know that I had a staffer that was actually held at gunpoint, you know, just over a year ago.

"And so, you know, we've got to clean this up. President Trump is doing what no one else has done before: over a thousand arrests, over a hundred illegal firearms seized. And so, he's doing what should have been done a long time ago. And I have a feeling it's going to be a model for doing it across the country unless these mayors and governors step up and do it themselves," Britt continued.
