ENTERPRISE — On Sunday, Wiregrass Republican Youth Outreach, a program of the Wiregrass Republican Women’s Club, hosted a panel for representatives from the University of Alabama College Republicans and College Republicans at Auburn at the Enterprise Country Club, who discussed how students can get involved in conservative politics.

With Carson Posman and Clay Newsom representing the University of Alabama College Republicans and College Republicans at Auburn, respectively, the questions covered topics such as how to get involved on campus, how to deal with left-leaning professors, and what advice to offer young people considering a career in public service.

When asked what the most pressing issue for young conservatives currently is, the panelists noted that the excitement to engage in the political process poses a unique challenge. With political participation by younger generations being stifled by issues such as the high cost of living and the complacency fostered by younger age groups consuming political content mostly through digital means

At the conclusion of the event, Posman, when asked about the main goal of participating, said: “It’s all about standing strong on your conservative values” as they transition into a college setting. Going on to say that, “You’re going to experience a lot of liberal professors at the university level, but it’s important to think of groups like College Republicans as a resource and an outlet for getting involved.”

The Republican Youth Outreach program is in its freshman semester, and plans to expand in the future as a resource for students in the Wiregrass area. When asked about the idea behind the event, club President Annabelle Wise stressed that when starting the group, “One of the biggest things for our members was how to get involved when transitioning from high school to college, or transferring to a four-year university, and about how to get involved in internships”.

Wise went on to say that the program's goal going forward is to get the word out, noting that it is about “making that connection and network, as sometimes people out there haven’t heard of this group, and we want to reach out to more people in the Wiregrass.”

Clay Newsom is a graduate student at Auburn.
