After weeks of negotiations, a peace deal with Iran could be imminent pending final approval by President Donald Trump.
According to reports, a deal has been reached to open the Strait of Hormuz and allow Iran to sell oil again while it negotiates nuclear plans with the U.S. All it needs to take effect is Trump’s signature.
On Thursday, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) explained the complexity of the situation and how difficult it is to negotiate with bad-faith actors.
“It's a complete mess. But President Trump is making progress. At the end of the day, everything he's doing, he doesn't know what to expect at the end of the negotiations. He doesn't know whether they're going to agree with it or they're going to go along with it,” Tuberville told Newsmax’s “Rob Schimtt Tonight.”
“Are they going to stick with it? But what I like is he's trying to put together the Abraham Accords at the same time, trying to get everybody on the same page, free up the Middle East, put all the people in the Middle East in charge of Iran instead of the United States of America. And I think that's the best thing he can do. And at the end of the day, you know, it's a long shot.”
He continued, “We've got to trust President Trump on what he's doing. We really don't know the situation behind the scenes. Again, you've got to remember the same group he's dealing with here, over what, two, two and a half months ago, they killed 40,000 of their own people, 40,000. So it's hard to trust mass murderers. But President Trump has told everybody he's going to make sure that no money goes out to the Iranians unless we get part of the plutonium and uranium back. I mean, at the end of the day, he's negotiating that. But, you know, to open up the Straits is interesting. It might be a ploy to get them to make some kind of deal that they're not getting.”
