Alabama Public Library Service (APLS) chairman and lieutenant governor candidate John Wahl said gubernatorial candidate Doug Jones is "out of touch with reality" after Jones' latest episode of "Doug Unplugged."
Jones answered a question from Jennifer Butler Keaton of Florence about how he plans to make Alabama more supportive of public libraries and to give people "free access to information and ideas."
The APLS has implemented new guidelines that libraries must follow to receive state funding. Those guidelines were put into place to protect children from sexually explicit materials and gender ideology. However, Jones said those protections would stop with him. He said public libraries have been "under siege" for the last couple of years and that, if elected governor, he would remove some APLS board members.
Jones acknowledged some books may be inappropriate for children and said those concerns can be "remedied without removing them" or "fixed without trying to ban books."
The APLS guidelines do not require the removal or banning of books. The guidelines require inappropriate materials be moved to the adult section, where minors whose parents approve of adult library cards can access them freely. Still, Jones said he would make changes on "day one or pretty close to it."
Wahl said that Jones should educate himself on the matter before making such judgments.
"Doug Jones is completely out of touch with reality and the people of Alabama," Wahl stated. "Maybe he should spend a little more time listening to the parents who are horrified by the pornographic materials their children are stumbling across in some libraries before making judgments. Alabama families don't want their kids exposed to this kind of trash and anyone who has actually reviewed these books understands exactly why. Frankly, the livestream should have been titled 'Doug Unhinged' instead of 'Unplugged.'"
"This just shows the far-left, Biden-loving, liberal elitist mentality Doug Jones stands for," he continued. "He actually believes that exposing young children to transgender story hour and pushing books filled with sexually explicit passages and graphic images is normal."
"It's not," Wahl added. "It's perversion."
Wahl said parents should not have to worry about what their children will be exposed to at the library. However, he said he doesn't think there will be any changes to the APLS board.
"Luckily, Democrat Doug and his woke supporters won't get the chance to use our libraries to indoctrinate children because I have every confidence that in November, Coach Tuberville will beat him like a peewee team playing in the NFL," Wahl said.
