Governor Kay Ivey has announced the special election date to fill the House of Representatives District 11 seat after its previous occupant, former State Rep. and House Majority Whip Randall Shedd (R-Fairview), departed to join leadership staff in the Senate.

Shedd announced his retirement from the House earlier this month after joining the body in 2013. He departed to join the staff of new State Sen. Pro-Tem Garlan Gudger (R-Cullman).

Ivey’s special proclamation on Monday sets the special primary election for Tuesday, May 13. The special primary runoff, if necessary, is set for Tuesday, June 10, and the special general election for Tuesday, August 26.

The deadline for qualifying with major political parties will be Tuesday, March 11, at 5:00 p.m. The deadline for all independent candidates and minor parties is Tuesday, May 13, at 5:00 p.m.

“Rep. Randall Shedd has been an effective leader for the people of District 11, putting his constituents first and working tirelessly to improve their communities,” Ivey said. “I was proud to work alongside him, especially to expand broadband access across Alabama, ensuring more families, students and businesses have connectivity. As we move forward in filling this seat, I encourage everyone in District 11 to make their voice heard by getting out and voting in this special election.”
