MONTGOMERY — Governor Kay Ivey said on Wednesday she will trust President Donald Trump's decision on whether to abolish the federal Department of Education.
The U.S. Department of Education announced on Tuesday that it was laying off 50% of its workforce as part of the department's "final mission."
Education Secretary Linda McMahon said on Tuesday the job cuts at her department are a step toward ending its operations entirely. Trump is reportedly considering an executive order to abolish the department.
When asked about the U.S. Department of Education being dismantled, Ivey said on Wednesday that state and local government "can handle education very well."
"I'm all for shrinking government where we can. Truth be known, every state has an education department and I know we've got a good one. The State Board of Education and local boards can handle education very well. I'm going to trust President Trump on this one," she stated.
