Less than a week after the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) concluded its investigation into the officer-involved shooting of Jabari Peoples, his family will now get a chance to view the bodycam footage.
The family's attorney, Leroy Maxwell, stated that the viewing will take place on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
Peoples, 18, was shot and killed by a Homewood police officer on June 23. According to the Homewood Police Department, the shooting occurred as an officer attempted to arrest Peoples for unlawful possession of marijuana and possible other charges. The suspect knocked the officer to the ground and retrieved the gun. That's when the officer fired one shot, striking Peoples.
"The details surrounding this incident are clearly captured on the officer's body-worn camera, of which ALEA took possession," Homewood Police said at the time.
Homewood officials and candidates, including Mayor Alex Wyatt, called for ALEA to allow the Peoples family to view the video.
On August 1, ALEA released a statement saying, “SBI’s investigative file, including any and all body-worn camera footage obtained by the City of Homewood’s Police Department, has been turned over to the Homewood Police Department and the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.”
Protests have continued even after the investigation’s conclusion, despite Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr assuring the family that he would allow them to view the video when it was released back to his office.

In their statement after their investigation, ALEA said, “The Agency would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding during the ongoing investigation. Additionally, ALEA would like to thank Governor Kay Ivey and State Representative Juandalynn Givan for their steadfast support throughout this investigation.”
