Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice and candidate for Attorney General Jay Mitchell is calling on the Alabama Public Library Service (APLS) to adopt a proposed code amendment he believes would help protect children from sexually explicit material and gender ideology.
In a letter addressed to the APLS board sent Monday, Mitchell expressed ‘strong support’ for the amendment and argued in favor of it.
“This amendment respects parental authority, shields minors from premature exposure to harmful content and preserves the integrity of our public libraries as places of learning-not platforms for toxic political agendas,” Mitchell wrote.
“It rightly recognizes that we have a duty to protect children from materials that promote transgender and gender ideology, content that is well known to cause social, physical, psychological and spiritual injury to minors.”
According to Mitchell, the amendment ensures parents have the final say in discussing topics related to sexuality with their children, not libraries.
“It supports parents in their God-given right and responsibility to frame conversation about sexuality with their children, rather than turning public libraries into yet another venue for the left to prematurely sexualize and radicalize our kids,” he added.
Mitchell called the amendment an ‘important first step’ in ensuring that public libraries are compliant with state and federal guidelines.
