Alabama Supreme Court Associate Justice Jay Mitchell resigned from the court on Monday.
According to Mitchell's resignation letter, obtained by 1819 News, he notified Gov. Kay Ivey on Monday that he was resigning from the court, citing a calling to "play a larger role" in seeing President Donald Trump's agenda take root not only in Alabama but around the country.
Mitchell is believed to be a possible candidate for the Republican nomination for Alabama's 2026 attorney general election. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall is term-limited and cannot run again.
Mitchell was first elected in 2018.
