Saturday evening, former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions reacted to an apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

Sessions had a presence at Trump's rallies throughout the 2016 campaign and said Trump's reaction was an indication of his "physical courage."

"Our prayers are with Pres. Trump and his family and the families of the rally attendees who were shot," Sessions said in a statement on his wife's Facebook account. "This is a terrible moment. Pres. Trump is a powerful leader. In 2016, I traveled with him to rallies all over the country. There was danger then and every day since as he takes his case so openly to the people. Yet he never waivers. He is always out front. His reaction to being shot demonstrates his physical courage. And you can be sure this will not stop him. America needs his leadership. We must never get to the point where violence makes in-person campaigning a thing of the past."
