U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) has joined colleague U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on a privileged resolution calling for the impeachment of U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas for his handling of the immigrant situation at the southern border.

With the possibility of criminals, drugs and terrorist actors entering the U.S. unvetted, security at the southern border has been a growing concern for Republican lawmakers.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported 6.2 million encounters since President Joe Biden took office and halted construction of a border wall and ended the “remain in Mexico” policy.

The 2023 fiscal year had the highest number of encounters ever recorded for a single year at 2.48 million, according to Border Patrol, which also seized 27,023 pounds of fentanyl that same year — a 464% increase from 2020.

As head of Homeland Security, much of the blame for the border crisis has landed at Mayorkas’ feet.

“Our border is WIDE open, and Mayorkas refuses to acknowledge the problem,” Carl posted on X. “He needs to be fired.”

Carl was responding to a post by Greene, who said Mayorkas was being “derelict of his duty to secure our Southern border.”

The two representatives drafted a resolution calling for his impeachment. Greene introduced the resolution last Thursday, and Fox News reported that the House will likely vote on it sometime this week.
