Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson's decision not to run for mayor in 2025 last week opened the door to a wide-open field of candidates seeking the position.

One of those who would immediately be considered a front-runner is outgoing U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile). Despite losing to U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) in a hotly contested first congressional district GOP primary contest, Carl had a very strong showing on his home turf in Mobile County.

During an interview with Mobile radio's FM Talk 106.5, Carl discussed the possibility of seeking the open mayoral position.

"You know, we're looking at that, Jeff,” he said. “And I know it sounds strange, but I've laid some things out that I was taught by a preacher how to do this. But I've laid some things out that I want to see. And only God can fulfill those things. And it's not money. It's not what most people would think. If those things fall into place, you'll see me get on board. If they don't fall in place, you will not see me get on board. It's that simple.”

Carl continued, “So, my job right now is just to sit tight, pray, keep my mind open, keep doing my job in Washington. Let's see where God wants us to go because there are so many opportunities for me in the private sector and in the political sector. So, we're just going to wait and see where God wants us because if I don't go where I think God wants me, I'm going to be miserable. And I don't want to be miserable the rest of my life. I want to enjoy it."
