HOOVER — Just one day after getting President Donald Trump's endorsement, John Wahl resigned his position as chairman of the Republican Party of Alabama (ALGOP) and shortly thereafter qualified for lieutenant governor.

Without fanfare that he feared would take away from the final moments of other republicans qualifying for election, Wahl, with Brittney Montgomery by his side, quietly filed his qualification paperwork.

Away from the hustle and bustle of the crowded lobby and conference room that sit just feet away, Wahl declined media interviews, saying he will officially launch his campaign early next week. Instead, he shifted attention back to the party's work to secure qualified candidates and ensure things were running smoothly, working until the last minute to fulfill his duties as party chairman and making calls and coordinating with leaders across the state to qualify as many republican candidates as possible for the upcoming election.

"It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party. However, after much thought and prayer, I have made the decision to step down following President Trump's encouragement and endorsement to run for Lieutenant Governor," Wahl said in a letter to State Executive Committee Members sent via email that 1819 News obtained from a source.

"While I will greatly miss serving as Chairman, I have complete faith and confidence in Vice Chairman Joan Reynolds and the outstanding ALGOP staff. Their leadership, professionalism, and commitment ensure that our Party remains in strong and capable hands," the letter continued.

As the qualifying window ran out, Wahl emerged from his office and greeted those in attendance, thanking staff for their efforts, which would run late into the night to ensure all qualifications were processed.

ALGOP bylaws prohibit Wahl from maintaining his chairmanship and running at the same time.

Primary Elections: The State Finance Chairman and officers of the State Committee, including the National Committeeman and National Committeewoman, shall not serve as campaign chairman, treasurer or official spokesman for a candidate in a contested primary election. They may be candidates for public or party office, including national convention delegate or alternate delegate; except the chairman and secretary may not be candidates in a contested primary election for a public statewide office or for member of congress.
