Former U.S. Senator and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Doug Jones is attacking his opponent, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn), for repeatedly going after the spread and rising influence of radical Islam across the United States in a series of social media posts.
Following Tuberville's online comments, Jones took to X, accusing Alabama's senior U.S. Senator of "dividing" Alabamians through alleged racist and Islamophobic comments, calling it a "new low."
"Tuberville's latest vile attempts to divide us have reached a new low, even for him," Jones lamented. "He has spent the last several days doubling down on racist and Islamophobic comments while cheering on a war in the Middle East."
Jones blamed Tuberville for using "dog whistle rhetoric" for "political gain."
"Alabama knows too well the damage that happens when politicians stoke division and hatred. We have spent generations trying to repair the reputation of our state after leaders tried to divide us instead of bringing us together," continued Jones.
"We've seen this all before. It never ends well, and we need good people from all across the political spectrum to stand up and counter this. What we need now is the opposite of the hatred and division we are hearing from Tuberville and Washington. We need our communities, churches, synagogues and mosques, to stand together and support one another," he added.
Along with the statement aimed at Tuberville, Jones bashed Republican leadership in Washington, D.C., and Montgomery for "failing" to denounce the senator's comments on Islam.
The failure of Republican leadership in both DC and Montgomery to denounce the racist comments of Tommy Tuberville is disappointing but not surprising. It’s time the voters in Alabama show them the way and reject this kind of hateful and divisive rhetoric once and for all. And… pic.twitter.com/YMFXn31bLW
