The race for the Republican nomination for the state's next attorney general is headed to a runoff between current Attorney General chief counsel Katherine Robertson and former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell after Tuesday's primary election.
The pair will face one another at the June 16 runoff election, after defeating Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey for a shot at the Republican Party's nomination.
Robertson received the majority of the votes, securing 189,175 votes (40.5%) by the time the race was called in the late hours of Tuesday night. Mitchell earned 160,613 votes (34.4%). Casey came in third, securing just 116,930 votes (25.1%).
Robertson swiftly went to social media to express gratitude and hope for the upcoming runoff.
Robertson and Mitchell set themselves apart from Casey in the lead-up to the election, engaging in a vigorous back-and-forth of attack ads and accusations.
