With President-elect Donald Trump assuming office in January, Congress should overhaul guestworker programs like H-1B visas, according to U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery).

Britt told 1819 News on Tuesday, “Working alongside President Trump and his team, my top priority starting in January is securing the border and enforcing immigration laws across our nation’s interior. We must replace catch-and-release with detain-and-deport. Some of the first actions I will take in the 119th Congress are reintroducing the Laken Riley Act, WALL Act, and the Keep Our Communities Safe Act.”

“However, I have always maintained while absolutely vital, fixing our crisis of illegal migration is only part of the problem. Since the passage of the disastrous 1965 Immigration and Naturalization Act, American workers have faced stagnant real wages. The bottom line is that U.S. immigration policies have been good for foreign nationals who want to come to America, but they have been bad for American workers in places like Alabama. That must change, and I will be introducing and fighting to enact legislation to help fix it. I believe in reducing overall legal immigration to a sensible level, while transitioning to a system that prioritizes skills and merit over family-ties,” she added. “In addition to ending our chain migration system and eliminating the diversity visa lottery, we need to overhaul guestworker programs that depress American wages and rob American workers of job opportunities, namely H-1B. This is critical to truly putting Americans first.”
