On Monday, Senate Majority Whip U.S. Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) named Alabama junior U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) to serve as deputy whip as the GOP prepares to take on a new Congress with a majority in both legislative bodies.

Deputy whips serve their party by working with other senators to advance the party's agenda. Deputy whips work mainly behind the scenes under the party whip, assisting in vote counting, legislative strategy, building coalitions, ensuring compliance and unity among party members, and more.

"I am honored Senator Barrasso chose me to join his team as one of the deputy whips," Britt said. "Our new Senate Republican majority has a tremendous opportunity to get things done and enact President Trump's agenda. As deputy whip, I am excited to help unite our conference and make a difference in the lives of hardworking Americans."

U.S. Sens. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and Todd Young (R-Ind.) were also appointed as deputy whips.

"I'm glad to have Katie as a member of our Whip Team," Barrasso said. "Katie is a fearless fighter for families and forgotten Americans. Her guiding principle is opportunity for all, especially our children. She works every day in the Senate to save our country and pass along a brighter future to the next generation. Katie is an incredible advocate for family-first solutions,"

Britt is shaping up to play a more central role in GOP politics within the new Republican-controlled Senate under President-elect Donald Trump.

In addition to getting personal kudos from Trump, Britt currently serves on the Senate Appropriations, Banking, and Rules committees. She was also recently appointed to the Senate Judiciary Committee, which evaluates all judicial nominations for the federal judiciary, including the Supreme Court, and has broad jurisdiction over immigration, Constitutional issues, and other legislative areas.
