Kenneth Cox announced his candidacy for Hoover City Council in late April. Over the weekend, he publicly declared that he will be seeking Place 2.

Place 2 will be an open seat with incumbent City Councilman Sam Sweeney announcing last month that he would not be running for reelection.

According to a press release when he announced, “Kenneth Cox has spent over two decades shaping young lives as a coach, administrator, and mentor, most notably as the Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach at Birmingham-Southern College, where he led teams to seven NCAA Division III national titles and earned induction into the BSC Sports Hall of Fame in 2024."

"As Associate Athletic Director, he championed student-athlete success, building programs that aligned with institutional and community goals. His leadership extends nationally as the former President of the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, where he shaped policies to advance the sport," the release adds.

The release said that Cox serves as vice chair of Leadership Hoover, Resource Development chair for the Boys & Girls Club of Central Alabama and a board member of the Hoover Parks & Recreation Foundation and Downtown Redevelopment Authority. Additionally, he serves as senior games manager for the 2025 World Police & Fire Games.

According to WBRC, in July 2023, Cox graduated from the Dr. Charles Whitcomb Leadership Institute. They reported that Cox was one of 18 minority athletic administrators in the country that was selected for the institute to graduate this summer. He told the outlet, "Through this program and this community, I have gained the tools that have made me equipped to handle leadership at levels I could have only dreamed about. I know that I am better because of the investment that the leadership institute made me, as well as how I was willing to grow through this program and progress.”

“I’m running for Hoover City Council to build a stronger, more connected community where every voice is heard,” Cox said in the release. “Hoover deserves leadership that prioritizes opportunity, safety, and growth for all its residents. I’ve spent my life bringing people together and delivering results; now, I’m ready to serve our city with that same dedication and vision.”
