Wetumpka City Councilman Kevin Robbins narrowly defeated challenger Hunter Mills in the city's runoff election on Tuesday.
Robbins won by a margin of 70 to 58 votes over Mills, according to unofficial results.
Robbins said on Facebook, "To my neighbors in District 1, thank you from the bottom of my heart. The love, support, and prayers you have shared with me over these last several weeks have been far beyond anything I could have imagined, and I am deeply humbled by it."
"I also want to thank Mayor Willis and my fellow councilmembers for their encouragement and partnership. Winning re-election is an incredible honor, but the greater reward is knowing that you believe in me and in the work we are doing together. Over the past decade, we have faced challenges, celebrated victories, and witnessed tremendous growth in our city," Robbins said. "I am proud of what we have accomplished, but I am even more excited about what lies ahead. Together with the Mayor, my fellow councilmembers, and you, the citizens, we will keep moving Wetumpka forward with transparency, accountability, and strong leadership. This is not just my victory. This is our victory. Let's continue building the future of Wetumpka, together."
Mills said in a statement to 1819 News, "Today the voters of District 1 went to the polls to cast their votes and I came up 12 votes short. Although the outcome was not what I hoped, I come away deeply grateful for the chance to run and to be a part of making Wetumpka better. I believe that service to one's community is never wasted."
"My commitment to this community remains strong. I believe our future is bright, because we have people who care, people who are engaged, principled, and hopeful," Mills said. "Thank you for walking with me this far. Together, we are stronger, and with pride, courage, and faith in God, we will not stop here."
