A talented group of middle schoolers from the Birmingham area recently formed a band and has big plans to rock and roll their way into music careers.
Iron City Revival is made up of five kids aged 10 to 14. Each band member has their own unique style and talent, but when they come together, magic happens.
Band members are lead singer Falynn Dugger, backup singer and guitarist Maggie Harrelson, electric guitar player Grey Rains, bass player Finn Nunnelley and drummer Trey Lockhart.
The group got together at Mason Music in Birmingham. Although they didn't have band experience, the well-trained members auditioned for the Rock Band League and were put together in August.
They practice often, either at school or in a bandmate's basement. With Birmingham's rich music culture, the band is in close proximity to some of the state's most well-known establishments and has already performed at WorkPlay Theatre, Woodlawn Theatre and Saturn. They also performed on Saturday at the Holiday on the Mountain festival at Vulcan.
The short but exciting ride has been a whirlwind, but at 12 years old, drummer Trey Lockhart said he was born for the beats.
"It comes very natural," Lockhart said. "Maybe when I was like three years old, I really liked the tone of the drums and so, I was like, 'Oh, that's pretty cool.' And my three-year-old self begged my mom to get me some like a toy drum set, and she finally gave it to me. I just completely rocked it out so much to where I literally put a hole in the kick drum."
Lockhart said he still gets nervous when starting a song on stage, but he keeps telling himself, "Don't mess up," and so far, it has worked.
Iron City Revival won the Battle of the Bands Openers division at WorkPlay and now gets four hours of professional studio recording time.
The band is now working on original songs and hopes to play at fairs and other events this spring. In the meantime, Lockhart will surely keep up the beat.
"I drum on literally everything," said Lockhart. "I just drum all the time. Speaking of drums, I'm drumming right now."
