Despite weeks of speculation that he was coming to fill the Auburn head football coaching vacancy, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin said he expected to return as coach of the Rebels in 2023.

Kiffin's Ole Miss team came up short against the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the Egg Bowl rivalry game 24-22 on a rainy night in Oxford, Miss., at Vaught–Hemingway Stadium.

The Rebels scored a late touchdown to come within two points of the Bulldogs but failed on the two-point conversion.

During his post-game press conference, Kiffin was asked about the Auburn job and if he anticipated being the Rebels' coach next year, even if he is offered the Auburn job.

"I do," Kiffin replied.

Auburn plays in the Iron Bowl on Saturday in Tuscaloosa, its annual rivalry game against the University of Alabama.

Under interim head coach Carnell Williams, the Tigers have a 2-1 record. They are a 22-point underdog against Alabama head coach Nick Saban's Crimson Tide.
