Alabama baseball struggled on the mound, dropping its midweek matchup with South Alabama 6-3 on Tuesday.
The Crimson Tide grabbed an early 2-0 lead with an RBI grounder from Brennan Holt in the second inning and an RBI single from Jason Torres in the third.
South Alabama responded with a run in its half of the fifth to cut the lead to one. Alabama pushed the lead back out to two when Bryce Fowler scored on a wild pitch in the seventh.
The Jaguars finally capitalized in their half of the seventh, plating four runs to take a two-run lead. Alabama pitchers had been flirting with disaster all night by allowing so many baserunners that eventually their luck ran out. The three-run loss for Alabama could have been worse, but the Jaguars had 17 runners left on base.
Bryce Fowler and Justin Lebron led the Crimson Tide in hits with two each as both went 2-for-4 at the plate. Jason Torres and Brennan Holt were the only Alabama hitters to record an RBI, as both were responsible for driving in both of Alabama’s runs.
Bobby Alcock got the start on the mound for the Crimson Tide, allowing four hits but no runs in his two innings of work. Alcock struck out two and hit one batter in his start.
Evan Steckmesser was handed the loss after allowing the go-ahead run to cross the plate in the seventh inning. Steckmesser recorded just one out in relief while giving up one run on two hits.
The Crimson Tide falls to 15-7 overall and 0-3 in the SEC on the season.
Alabama will host No. 18 Florida in a weekend series March 20-22, beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
