A former Opelika mayoral candidate is facing a second-degree perjury charge for lying on his campaign application, the Lee County District Attorney’s Office claimed.

Herman Grady Barnes III was arrested on Thursday and booked into the Lee County Detention Facility.

According to court documents, Barnes is accused of signing a statement of candidacy to run for an elected office in Opelika, knowing he was not a resident of Opelika.

Barnes only received 2% of the votes on Tuesday against Eddie Smith and Raven Harvis. Smith won the election with 56% of the votes.

Barnes is considered innocent until proven guilty.
