It appears Lee County voters are going in a new direction after unofficial election results showed Sheriff Jay Jones lost in the Republican primary.
Cam Hunt narrowly won with 51% of the votes. Voting totals showed Hunt had 9,301 votes and Jones had 8,994 votes.
Hunt, a U.S. Marine and former Opelika police officer, was fired from the sheriff's office after he announced his candidacy for sheriff last fall.
Jones, who has been sheriff for nearly 30 years, still has a chance if he has enough votes with provisional ballots. Those ballots will be counted next week, and election results will then be certified and made official.
