A liberal grassroots activist group with a nationwide network has been illegally displaying politically oriented signs and banners on a public overpass in Huntsville near the U.S. Space and Rocket Center on I-565.
According to state law, the signs and banners violate Right-of-Way Restrictions due to their attachment to and placement on public right-of-ways, which can include overpass structures, fences and utility poles. Per city code, the signs constitute a traffic hazard if they are deemed a "visual distraction" for drivers or "impede public safety." A violation of the Huntsville ordinance can be classified as a misdemeanor.
Despite strict limitations imposed by Huntsville and the state of Alabama, the Huntsville Visibility Brigade has continued to use the overpass, encountering little to no apparent resistance from the city's Zoning Administration, which is responsible for enforcing both sign permit laws and sign control regulations in Huntsville.
To clarify the laws for signs and banners on overpasses in Huntsville, 1819 News contacted the administration, which confirmed the group was breaking the law.
Past messages seen attached to the overpass during the group's demonstrations have included "STOP THE MAD KING NOW!", "Impeach the Orange Bastard," "Fascism hates fair voting," "Abolish ICE, "War crimes don't hide sex crimes," "NO JIM CROW 2.0!" and "Their rights today. Your rights next."

The Huntsville Visibility Brigade partners with other local liberal organizations, such as Indivisible 5th District North Alabama, Huntsville 50501 and Purple People Resistance, on political events. All three organizations played a significant role in organizing the widely attended "No Kings Protest" in Huntsville in October 2025.
