State Rep. Susan DuBose (R-Hoover) said the legislature is poised to reevaluate how Alabama's colleges and universities train teachers during the 2026 legislative session.

In an interview on "Right Side Radio," DuBose said that while the calendar for this session will be fast-tracked, she expects education to take center stage.

"We're going to squeeze all of our days in. Our 30 days that are normally spread over 105 days, we may spread them in 90 days or 60 days. We don't know, but we're going to be in session at least three days a week instead of two," she said.

DuBose explained that, with Education Committee chairwoman State Rep. Terri Collins (R-Decatur) announcing she will not seek reelection and with the things she wants to accomplish before she goes, she expects a number of education bills to come up.

"One of them is teacher prep programs. I think we need more accountability there. And we want our teacher prep programs to be actually be preparing our teachers to teach," DuBose said. "We want them to pass the exams. We want them to have the proper testing and credentials in order to teach."

She described some of the work and flexibility the legislature could be looking for, including a review of mission statements and curriculum, which could pose potential questions.

"Have they eliminated all that crazy, woke, DEI, social justice curriculum?" she asked. "That's a waste of time. Our teachers need to know how to teach kids to read, how to do math, and how to do the basics."

"We want them focused on what we know works. And I'm not sure that that's going on in all of our universities. And what are their pass rates?" she asked.

"Are there some programs that we need to adjust? So, looking at mission statements and curriculum helps us see if they're on the right track."
