“We never know when the clock is going to run out. Make every second count.” – Charlie Mashburn, aka “Chuck Leonard”
Charles Mashburn, who greeted WTVM viewers every morning for 38 years before his retirement in 2019, has died. He was 71.
Mashburn, known to viewers as Chuck Leonard, was in hospice care at the time of his death.
Although he retired in 2019 and told 1819 News he was enjoying retirement, he continued to connect with the community through “Chuck’s History Lesson,” posting daily historical facts.
Mashburn, an Odenville native, graduated from St. Clair County High School in 1972. He began his broadcasting career in 1974, working at various radio stations, including KMX Radio in Enterprise and WRFS in Alexander City. He was hired at WTVM in 1981. He and his wife, Carole, placed their family’s roots in Columbus, where he anchored the morning show for nearly four decades. The couple had two children – Ann Elizabeth and Michael.
In honor of his retirement, Dec. 20, 2019, the City of Columbus proclaimed the day “Chuck Leonard Day.”
Mashburn passed away on December 19, six years after his final newscast.
