UPDATE: Montgomery man charged with capital murder in death of retired Auburn University professor
The Auburn Police Department is investigating after a woman was found dead in a wooded area at Kiesel Park Saturday afternoon.
Investigators said it appears Julie Gard Schnuelle, 59, a retired Auburn University professor, was attacked and killed while walking her dog.
“Julie Gard Schnuelle, DVM, Ph.D., was a beloved member of the Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and the Auburn Family," Auburn University stated. "She served as a faculty member in the Department of Clinical Sciences in the Large Animal/Food Animal section from 2003 to 2021, when she retired as a professor emerita."
Police are investigating the death as a homicide. They said there was no threat to the community, but have not announced an arrest. Several media outlets reported police were searching for a red Ford F-150 that appeared to have a Lee County tag.
Kiesel Park is the city's largest park, and it includes a walking trail, a pond and an off-leash dog area. The park is closed for the investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Auburn Police at 334-246-1391.
