James E. Mayo, Sr., was an officer with the Mobile Police Department and an investigator from 1970 to 1997.

He retired from the Mobile County Sheriff’s office, where he served from 1998 to 2002. He was the Chief Deputy and picked up the lifelong moniker “Chief.”

He ran unsuccessfully for sheriff of Mobile County in 2002.

He worked as a contractor for the U.S. Department of Defense.

He served in Iraq as an interrogator of detainees.

He died March 14 at age 76.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 12 at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church, 1419 Government Street, Mobile.
