MONTGOMERY — Local legislation to legalize pari-mutuel gambling at the White Hall Entertainment Center in Lowndes County passed the Alabama Senate on Tuesday by an 18-7 margin.
The bill, introduced by State Sen. Robert Stewart (D-Selma), would allow the authorization of pari-mutuel wagering on simulcast past events and live horse and dog races in White Hall under certain conditions, and provide for the taxation of wagering and the distribution of tax revenue.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall shut down White Hall Entertainment and froze its assets in November 2023 over "illegal slot machines" in the facility. The state's litigation against White Hall Entertainment is ongoing.
"It is legislation that would permit pari-mutuel gaming in the city," Stewart said on the Senate floor.
The bill now heads to the House for their consideration.
