The former chief trial attorney for the Madison County District Attorney's Office, Tim Douthit, was sworn in as the county's newest district judge on Friday.

Set to begin his new role next week, the veteran prosecutor first announced his bid for office in mid-December.

Douthit started his legal career in private practice before entering public service as a prosecutor with the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office in 2011.

In 2016, Douthit returned to Huntsville to join the Madison County District Attorney’s Office, where he worked in the Crimes Against Children Unit. He also took on a violent crime caseload that included capital murder, rape, home invasion and armed robbery.

Douthit is filling the seat formerly held by District Judge Ron Smith, who was appointed by Gov. Kay Ivey, to serve as Madison County Circuit Judge in Alabama’s 23rd Judicial Circuit.
