HUNTSVILLE — Madison County District Attorney Robert Broussard announced on Wednesday his office will not be seeking criminal charges in the case of a Deshler High School student who was severely injured on campus in August.

Fifteen-year-old August Borden was medflighted from the school and hospitalized with brain injuries and broken orbitals, leading to suspicion from many in the community that he was assaulted by a group of fellow students.

Broussard, speaking from the Madison County Courthouse, firmly disagreed with the speculation, instead revealing to the media that Borden’s injuries were found to be the result of a “freak accident.”

“There has been a lot of speculation, a lot of conspiracy theories about how this was some awful beat down and an assault of a student there at Deshler High School,” Broussard said.

“I’m here to tell you the conclusion of our investigation shows that's absolutely not the case. Instead, what we have here what we've learned is this is more or less typical high school banter and some limited physical contact involved with no malice, no anger involved among any of the students, and a freak, unfortunate accident that resulted in the injured student's injuries.”

The case, according to Broussard, is now closed.

“As I said, it was a freak accident that resulted in serious injury on the injured student," he said. "So our job here was to determine what happened, and after determining what happened, whether there was any possibility for any kind of criminal action in this matter. And I'm here telling y'all, this case is closed as far as the criminal justice system goes. We are through with it.”

“There's lots of unfortunate things that happen in life, but we uncovered no evidence that would support any kind of criminal charges in this matter,” Broussard added.
