Mailers supporting Scott Ortis’ campaign for State Senate District 15 were thrown into a pond in Greystone over the weekend.
According to Ortis, the incident was the result of United States Postal Service (USPS) and postal workers interfering.
“Missing a mailer? Thank you to residents who let our team know that an entire batch of mailers supporting our campaign had been thrown in a pond,” Ortis said on Facebook on Monday. “It is truly a sad day in America when USPS and postal workers interfere with our elections! Every voter deserves to hear where candidates stand on the issues, but this won’t stop us from spreading our message and working to earn your vote on May 19!”
A spokesperson for USPS told 1819 News on Tuesday that the incident was referred to the USPS Office of Inspector General.
“The U.S. Postal Service is committed to the secure, timely delivery of the nation’s Political and Election Mail. The U.S. Mail serves as a secure, efficient, and effective means for citizens and campaigns to participate in the electoral process. The matter in question has been referred to the USPS Office of the Inspector General,” Debra Jean Fetterly, USPS spokesperson for the Alabama-Mississippi District, said on Tuesday.
