President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he is taking significant steps to address rampant crime in Washington, D.C., and Alabama's Republican congressional delegation is backing his efforts.

Trump declared Monday "Liberation Day in D.C." and announced that the National Guard was being deployed to “help reestablish law and order of public safety" in the nation's capital.

“This is Liberation Day in D.C., and we’re going to take our capital back. We’re taking it back. Under the authorities vested in me as the President of the United States, I’m officially invoking section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act — you know what that is — and placing the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control, and you’ll be meeting the people that will be directly involved with that,” Trump revealed right off the bat.

Trump added that it was not a partisan issue.

“I understand a lot of you tend to be on the liberal side, but … you don’t want to get mugged and raped and shot and killed," he outlined.

The president's announcement to crack down on crime in the nation's capital has support from both U.S. Sens. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) and Katie Britt (R-Montgomery).

Britt, who had a staffer robbed and carjacked at gunpoint in D.C. in 2023, thanked Trump for his commitment to making the capital safe again after "rapidly" deteriorating "due to radical left-wing policies."

"Our nation’s capital should represent the best of America," Britt wrote on X. "Sadly, the seat of our government has rapidly deteriorated due to radical left-wing policies. Thankful [President Trump] is committed to making our capital safe and beautiful again!"

Tuberville lamented that it was "beyond humiliating" that D.C. had been "overrun by crime, gangs, and illegals."

He posted on X, "Thank you [President Trump. It is beyond humiliating that our nation’s capital has been overrun by crime, gangs, and illegals. It’s time we MAKE D.C. SAFE AGAIN."

U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) said he was thankful for Trump's efforts to make America safe again.

"Thankful for President Trump's commitment to making America safe again!" he wrote on X.
