U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) on Wednesday called for Republicans in Congress to bypass Democratic stalling tactics that continue to leave the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) unfunded.

In a message released to the media, Tuberville highlighted the need for immigration and other DHS-related services, pointing to the March killing of an 18-year-old freshman at Loyola University, who was allegedly killed by an illegal alien.

“For those of you keeping count back home, today is 67 days since the Senate Democrats decided to hold [DHS] hostage to keep their voting base of illegal aliens happy,” Tuberville said. “I want you to think about this: Democrats are shutting down the department tasked with defending our homeland, all to protect illegal criminals like the one who killed an 18-year-old in Chicago last month. It makes me absolutely sick to my stomach.”

Senate Democrats have blocked the advancement of the funding package for months, holding out for reforms they want to see specifically in immigration enforcement.

Thus far, Senate Republican leadership has not tried to squeeze DHS funding through budget reconciliation, which would require only a 51-vote majority. Most recently, reconciliation was used to push through Trump’s so-called Big Beautiful Bill.

Tuberville went on to urge leadership to “end this madness” by using the reconciliation process to subvert Democratic efforts.

“We need to do whatever it takes to fund border patrol, ICE, TSA [and] Coast Guard so they have the resources needed to keep America safe," he added.
