Lee County Circuit Judge Jeffrey Gerald Tickal ordered a mental evaluation for the suspect in the murder of retired Auburn University professor Julie Gard Schnuelle.
Harold Dabney III is charged with two counts of capital murder. His attorneys made a motion for a mental evaluation stating he may "lack sufficient present ability to assist" in his defense by consulting with counsel, "with a reasonable degree of rational understanding of the facts and the legal proceedings."
Attorneys said they believe Dabney may have an undiagnosed psychiatric disorder.
According to court documents, Dabney intends to plead not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
Schnuelle, 59, was murdered on September 6 while walking her dog in Kiesel Park.
Dabney is considered innocent until proven guilty.
